Do German Shepherds Like to Cuddle: Jasper’s Take

Hi! My name is Jasper! I’m a GSD so I am uniquely qualified to answer the question do German Shepherds like to cuddle?

The answer is yes.

The answer is also sometimes.

And finally, the answer is maybe not.

This is not me so don’t use this picture. Mom says it belongs to istock. You can use all my other pictures just give us a linkback!

I myself, really love to cuddle! Just yesterday I was trying to crawl up in Mom’s lap only to discover I don’t fit any more. When did that happen? I can still fit on Dad’s lap. Well, sort of anyway. My tail and most of my head sort of hang off.

It all goes back to the chihuahuas only in this case it’s actually a Papillion. Mom has two Papillions. See here we all are before I got big.

Anyway, my sister Dottie always sits on Mom’s lap, right on the arm of her chair. She fits there really well and because she is older and has been here longer she’s bossy and doesn’t like me to even lay my nose on the chair! She smells really good too! So maybe I do sort of shift my nose, which is now bigger than all of Dottie, a bit to sniff her. Who wouldn’t? But Dottie doesn’t like that at all and has NO trouble saying so. Let me tell you even seven pounds of angry female is nothing to mess around with!

But even though I can’t sit on her lap, that doesn’t mean I don’t like to cuddle. One of my favorite things is when Mom and Dad do whatever it is they are doing and I get to be on the couch with them. That’s really cool! At least it would be if they had a couch. Mom says she might buy one just so I won’t feel left out.

Jaspers Handsome Teeth

Anyway, so of course. I want to sit on Mom’s lap too. Only now I’m too big. I’m way bigger now than Dottie. Actually, I was always way bigger than Dottie. I also have much bigger teeth, see. But since Dottie has had most of her teeth pulled I guess thats not a fair comparison. Still, I have really nice teeth, don’t you think?

Speaking of teeth, why do humans insist on brushing dogs teeth? They use that yucky toothpaste that tastes nothing like beef, let me tell you! I don’t care what the label says. No beef in that stuff. I should know. I have a very good sniffer. Mom gave up on that and just used the brush. It’s probably second on the list of things I hate right behind nail clipping. That’s the worst! But mom says if I don’t want to end up like Dottie I better let her brush my teeth.

I personally, think Dottie smells very good even without teeth but my teeth are so impressive I suppose I better just let Mom brush them. Like I have any choice.

Back to the Subject of Cuddling

Anyway, back to the question Do German Shepherds like to cuddle? What you have to understand is my ancestors were bred to work sheep. I really want to meet a sheep. Mom says that’s probably genetic. Whats genetic?

So besides liking sheep a lot, we like to work hard every day and take our job of protecting sheep or humans if we don’t have any sheep very seriously. So being cuddly may not be our best thing. It’s probably hard to be cuddly and scare away wolves, or bad guys at the same time. I haven’t actually tried that yet but I can imagine it would be hard to do both. I myself tend toward the cuddly side which mom says is because I am special, which is of course true. But some of my kin may not have a cuddly gene or it may not be as well developed as mine is.

The point is you can’t count on your German Shepherd being cuddly. They may be like me but then again they may not. What they will be, cuddly or not, are good protectors. Also, we may try to herd your children around because small human children look a little like sheep in need of herding. Mom says small human children usually are in need of herding, and big children too. I guess Mom should know since she’s a pretty good herder herself from what I can see.

Jasper’s Preference

For me, I prefer cuddling to herding but hey that’s just my personal choice. Mom says I’m a special dog and should have some personal preferences. We all know how important it is to be yourself, right? That’s why I think it’s so important for each German Shepherd to decide if they want to be cuddly or not and their humans should respect that.

When I’m not cuddling up on Dad’s lap, I like the bed below. Mom got it for me because I kept trying to sleep in Dotties bed just like this only pretty soon I was too big to fit! It’s a nice bed! Very cuddley! Mom says this is an affilate link. Whats that?

Do you have Sheep?

At the end of the day, no matter how cuddly or not your German Shepherd is they will make for a great companion. We are loyal, smart and eager to please. Also, as an added bonus, if you happen to have sheep we know how to herd them. Do you have any sheep? If so, can I come over?

Conclusion

So thats my take on do German Shepherds like to cuddle, it depends on the dog. If you want to get an idea of what your German Shepherd’s cuddly level is like then take some time and observe them. They may surprise you with their cuddliness or lack thereof.

This is Jasper signing off. Woff!
